Flame on, McCain

I've been kind of following this McCain sell out business. I watched him message his way through Russert's interview on Sunday. But last night on the Daily Show, John McCain finally discussed what all serious candidates for president (apparently) must do: Sellin out to the base.

John Stewart asked McCain: Has the straight talk express taking a detour to bullshit town? After saying the same talking point three times to explain his recent acceptance to give the commencement at Liberty University, the Senator finally just admitted that it was, in fact, time to take it to the base. Sound familiar?

Who cares where he's speaking? Well, Liberty University is not exactly where freedom rings. It was founded by the evangelical-icous Jerry “agent of intolerance” Falwell. Aside from the fact that his university is said to "maintains a history of aggressively investigating the sexual orientation of faculty and students and expelling those who are found to be gay," Jerry is also fucking nuts.

Need a refresher, here are some quotes and others to check out.

My fav's from Falwell:

"Grown men should not be having sex with prostitutes unless they are married to them."

"AIDS is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals. To oppose it would be like an Israelite jumping in the Red Sea to save one of Pharoah's chariotters."

"The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country”

re: 9/11 attacks) "...throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools, the abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked and when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad...I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who try to secularize America...I point the thing in their face and say you helped this happen."”

“[homosexuals are] brute beasts...part of a vile and satanic system [that] will be utterly annihilated, and there will be a celebration in heaven.”

Wow, can you say "Jesus loves you" or what?!

So while Liberty U does purport to be a place where you find “Knowledge Aflame” –it's probably a safe bet that you can also find aflame books or gays or Jews or blacks or PFAW staff (Just a guess).

Here's what makes me sad:

The main reason I liked McCain was even though I didn't always agree with him, he seemed to "tell it how it is" as the lead conductor of the straight talk express. The DNC (and others) recently dubbed him the double talk express for this comment said during his last presidential run: “Neither party should be defined by pandering to the outer reaches of American politics and the agents of intolerance, whether they be Louis Farrakhan or Al Sharpton on the left or Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell on the right.” Oh, oops.

And, yeah, I get it that you two met to discuss the twain and all that, but I don't think it's Falwell that had to change, my man.

Of course, it was easier for McCain to take "radical" positions against racists and bigots when he was considered “fringe” and his opponent is more mainstream. Hell, you’re a war hero and Democrats like you, too. Let that idiot son-of-the-ex-president kiss the crazies’ asses, right?

Not if you're the man to beat.

So long story short, McCain has to kiss the rings of Falwell and his base as well as perpetually dry hump the guy who accused him of being pro-Breast Cancer (even though McCain’s sister is a breast cancer survivor) during their go-around.

I like my people winning as much as the next, but this does give me pause. While someone may feel like they can sell out a little here and there for the greater good of them as prez and not that other guy, I still question what those successions will bring later?

In a press release from the Family Research Council. President Tony Perkins said that while he’ll be onstage w/ McCain at Liberty University, he wants to know once and for all how the Senator would vote on the federal marriage amendment as president?

Grease up that slope, boys.

That's really funny that the president of the Family Research Council has the same name as the actor who played the Psycho in the film "Psycho."

I never quite got what the Rep. party's "base" saw in Bush in 2002, when McCain seemed to be at his best. Maybe instead of playing to the base he needs to play to the treble.
